Information & Communication Technology

The integration of digital mediums to the traditional classroom environment for our techno-savvy students will be key to ensuring that they remain engaged with learning in the future.  Blackwater SHS, by injecting a large percentage of our annual budget into the acquisition of ICT infrastructure each year, has shown that it is committed to integrating digital pedagogical techniques into the classroom.  This year, as the result of a Government grant, the school took delivery of new ACER Student Laptops for all Year 9 and 10 Students. In 2013 we will receive additional laptops so that all students in Years 8-11 will have access to one.   In addition to this the school has 4 computer labs, which have been upgraded this year and 2 full class sets of laptops which were supplied by the National Secondary School Computer Fund. Furthermore, Mac Book ‘Air’ laptops have just been purchased for the music department to use for composition, and Ipads for the English and SOSE department, which will be trialled in 2013.  Every teacher in the school also has a laptop courtesy of the Federal Governments ‘Computers For Teachers’ initiative.

Purchasing the computers is not the end of the story in order for the school to be able to use them.  Recently our school has had cabling upgraded and a wireless network was installed. Students and teachers are now able to access the internet and network, quickly and efficiently from any location around the school. To keep our equipment functioning well we have a computer technician on site to maintain the ICT within the school. Printers and scanners are also located around the school for teachers and students to utilise.

ICT within a school is not limited to computers. At Blackwater SHS most classrooms within the school have an interactive whiteboard. Interactive whiteboards raise the level of student engagement in a classroom, motivate students and promote enthusiasm for learning. Teachers are able to access websites and learning objects so that students can really ‘interact’ with the concepts and content they are learning. Additionally the school has just purchased five NXT robots. Robotics is a problem solving based tool that is the cutting edge of emerging industries in our global economy. Students develop problem solving skills to solve real world applications with the use of the robots and computer software. The school also has digital cameras, digital video cameras and equipment that can be used in conjunction with computers to analyse certain characteristics of the students’ physical, chemical, geological, or biological worlds.

Investment in ICT infrastructure is only part of Blackwater SHS’s strategy to integrate digital technology into the classroom.  To complement the hardware purchased we have also invested a lot of money into the acquisition of software.  The computer room located in the Manual Arts Block and has been designed for the teaching of Graphics using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software.  Computer rooms in F Block have the complete software package, Adobe Creative Suite, installed on them for use of ICT and visual art classes.  Music composition software, Garageband and Sibelius, are installed on the Macs in Music while Accounting and Business subjects continue to integrate industry standard ICT programs to supplement the theory content relating to financial applications. Just recently editing software for Film and Television has been installed for the new subject in 2013. These are just some of the many examples of software that is being utilised in many subjects across the school.
The future is bright for Blackwater SHS students as they look to become active members of an increasingly technologically dependant society.
